In much of the developed world, crypto payments are a solution seeking a problem. In markets with volatile currencies and limited banking access, they are simply how a growing share of commerce gets done, and the growth compounds without headlines.

The workhorse is the dollar stablecoin held on a phone. Merchants invoice in it, workers receive remittances in it, and small importers pay suppliers with it, use cases where the alternative is not a credit card but a currency losing value or a transfer costing a tenth of its amount.

Local infrastructure has matured around the demand: cash-in and cash-out networks through agents and kiosks, merchant tools that settle to local currency instantly for those who want it, and lending against payment history for those who stay in digital dollars.

The pattern complicates tidy narratives about adoption. The most durable crypto economy is not where the technology is most celebrated but where the incumbent alternative is weakest, a lesson development economists could have predicted and mostly did.
