Custody, Crypto's Safest Business, Enters a Price War
Bank entrants and scale players are compressing fees for institutional safekeeping, pushing specialists toward higher-value services.
JurgenNL via Wikimedia Commons · CC BY-SA 2.0Institutional crypto custody spent years as a scarce, premium service. It is now a competitive one. Bank trust departments, exchange affiliates, and specialist custodians are bidding for the same mandates, and basis-point fees that once looked like software margins are trending toward the economics of traditional safekeeping.
The compression is a sign of the market working. Standards have converged, insurance capacity has deepened, and the technical moats that justified premium pricing have narrowed as key-management practice became shared knowledge.
Specialists are responding by climbing the stack, into staking, settlement, collateral management, and reporting, where fees still reflect complexity. The strategic map is legible to anyone who watched securities services consolidate: custody becomes the anchor product that wins the relationship, and the profit migrates to everything attached to it.
