Margin Calls at Machine Speed Test the New Collateral Rails
Instant collateral mobility delights treasurers in calm markets; risk officers are gaming out what it does in a stressed one.
Wikimedia Commons · CC BY-SA 3.0Collateral that moves in minutes is an efficiency in calm markets and an open question in stressed ones. As tokenized instruments enter margin programs, risk teams are modeling a new dynamic: margin calls met, and made, at machine speed, without the overnight pauses that historically gave markets time to think.
The optimists' case is that faster collateral reduces stress, since shortfalls resolve before they cascade. The cautionary case is procyclicality with the latency removed: automated calls triggering automated liquidations in minutes rather than days. Clearinghouses are responding with circuit-breaker logic in programs that accept tokenized margin, throttles designed before they are needed.
The honest position, held by practitioners on both sides, is that the system's stressed behavior is unknowable until stressed. The infrastructure is being built with that humility unevenly distributed.
