If tokenization has a killer application in wholesale markets, it is collateral mobility. Margin that moves in minutes instead of overnight changes the arithmetic of every leveraged position, and clearinghouses, custodians, and exchanges are competing to provide the rails.

The demand side needs no persuasion. Treasurers at trading firms describe collateral trapped in transit as a pure cost, capital posted in one venue, needed in another, and unavailable in both for a settlement cycle. Tokenized money market funds and cash equivalents that transfer instantly against obligations attack that cost directly.

Clearinghouses are the pivotal adopters, since collateral is only useful where obligations live. Several major clearing venues now accept tokenized instruments for margin in defined programs, and each acceptance expands the network of places a tokenized asset can work.

The competitive question is whose ledger wins, and the likely answer is several, stitched together by the interoperability standards taking shape across the industry. In wholesale finance, the prize for infrastructure providers is not disruption but toll collection, and the booths are being built now.
