Tokenization Moves From Pilot Programs to Institutional Markets

Money market funds and private credit are leading the migration of real assets onto shared ledgers, with custody and legal finality the remaining battlegrounds.

Tokenization has found its beachhead assets. Money market funds and private credit, instruments with steady demand and painful legacy operations, account for most of the real institutional volume moving onto shared ledgers, and the firms involved describe demand as investor-led rather than vendor-pushed.

The attraction is operational. Tokenized fund shares settle against payment instantly, serve as collateral without days of movement, and carry their ownership record with them. For private credit, where administration costs are notoriously heavy, issuers report meaningful savings in servicing and transfer.

The unresolved questions are legal rather than technical. Which record is authoritative when ledger and registrar disagree, how custody obligations map onto token holdings, and whether courts will treat on-chain transfer as final are questions being answered jurisdiction by jurisdiction, and the answers determine where volume concentrates.

Market structure is forming around the gaps. Custodians, fund administrators, and exchanges are competing to be the trusted intermediary of the tokenized world, a reminder that removing intermediaries was never the institutional pitch. Reducing their cost was.
