Yields hit 4.86% as a buyback lands short
The Treasury tripled the size of its long-bond repurchase and the market still wanted more. Ten-year yields closed at their highest since October 2023.
A debt buyback is two things at once: a transaction that retires bonds, and a statement about how much support the issuer intends to provide. On Wednesday the market read the second and disliked it.
Benchmark ten-year Treasury yields reached 4.856%, their highest level since October 2023, after the Treasury said it would repurchase $6 billion of long-dated debt. Euronews reported that some analysts had been looking for $7bn to $8bn.
"People thought the buyback was going to be larger than $6 billion," Tom di Galoma, a managing director at Mischler Financial, told Reuters. "It was a disappointment so bond prices sank and yields rose."
The mechanics are unglamorous. A buyback takes older, less liquid issues out of the market and replaces the liquidity with cash, which supports pricing in the parts of the curve where dealers are least willing to hold inventory. Announce less than expected and you have told the market its support is thinner than assumed.
What happened next complicates the reading. Yields came off their highs after a $39 billion auction of ten-year notes drew what was described as very strong demand, with the paper clearing at the highest auction yield since 2007.
Those two facts sit together awkwardly, and the awkwardness is the story. Demand for new ten-year paper at 4.8% is robust. Appetite for the Treasury's support of the existing long end is a separate question, and the buyback size is the only regular signal the market gets about it.
A yield at a three-year high is not in itself a warning. Rates rose through 2023 at higher levels than this without a funding problem. What matters is whether the move is driven by growth and inflation expectations or by the market pricing a term premium for absorbing supply.
A disappointing buyback pushes the answer toward the second. It says nothing about the economy and everything about who is willing to hold duration, and at what price.
