Enterprise networks spent two decades deferring modernization with translation layers and private addressing. The machine era is ending the deferral. Fleets of devices, services, and AI agents, each needing identity and reachability, are exhausting the workarounds, and network teams are undertaking renumbering projects they postponed for a generation.

The forcing function is operational rather than ideological. Address translation at machine scale breaks the end-to-end visibility that security tooling assumes, and troubleshooting through stacked translation layers consumes the time modernization was supposed to cost.

The projects are unglamorous, multi-year, and finally funded, typically bundled into zero-trust and segmentation programs where the budget already exists. Nobody celebrates addressing upgrades; networks simply stop being the constraint, which is the only praise infrastructure ever earns.
