Security Tool Sprawl Meets Its Budget Reckoning
CISOs are consolidating dozens of point products onto platforms, trading marginal capability for integration and one renewal fight.
Wikimedia Commons · CC BY 2.0The average enterprise security stack accumulated tools the way attics accumulate boxes, and finance has begun asking what is in them. Consolidation is the reigning program: point products absorbed into platforms, overlapping agents retired, and vendor counts cut by margins CISOs quote with visible relief.
The trade is acknowledged openly. Platforms rarely match the best point product in every category, and buyers are accepting marginal capability loss for integrated data, fewer consoles, and negotiating leverage concentrated into one renewal. The deciding factor, repeatedly cited, is the analyst experience: alerts that correlate themselves save more risk than a marginally better detector adds.
Vendors have organized around the moment, bundling aggressively and acquiring the categories they lack. The dynamic rewards scale and punishes single-feature companies, which is why the startup ecosystem's advice to founders has shifted from build a product to build a platform module someone must buy.
